happy family

The lesson topic we discussed during Sunday School yesterday was CHILD ADOPTION. Our discussion set me thinking. Beyond seeing those who are childless seeking the option of adoption, I have never given serious thoughts to adoption. I started looking at adoption from the standpoint of the adopted person – the poor, the orphans, the abandoned, the abused, people displaced through wars and natural disasters are all candidates for adoption!

Adoption is the action or fact of legally assuming the parenting of another person’s child and bringing it up as one’s own, or the fact of being adopted. It involves leaving one’s natural family and entering into the privileges and responsibilities of another family.
From that lesson it became clear to me that even though every child has a divine purpose to fulfill, not every child will have the privilege of being nurtured by their biological parents to the point of fulfilling their purpose. It is also clear that you are not blessed simply because you birthed a child, the blessing is more because you raised and nurtured a child.

Christmas is the season of love. A season when we are all being reminded that through Jesus Christ, we can be adopted into the family of God.

“God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”
Ephesians 1:5 NLT

God cares for all, regardless of your parenthood.

“A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation. God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity; But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.”
Psalms 68:5-6 NKJV

We were created by God to have relationships, and some of the greatest joys in our life can be found in our connection with others—with our spouses, our friends, our children and grandchildren, coworkers and neighbors. But, we don’t have to be related to be a family. There are abandoned or abused  children who long for family connections.
Such people feel most lonely during the holidays.
Adoption is selflessness, an act of love. Putting the needs of others ahead of your own is very rewarding:

“And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.””
Matthew 10:42 NLT

If you can afford it and your heart is willing, you can be a blessing to needy children. Check this link for further information on child adoption:

Spread love this season, think of practical ways you can make two or three people feel loved this holiday season. You’ll be greatly blessed by so doing
