“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.””
Genesis 1:27-28 NKJV
Biblically, the term dominion means to rule over nature. The idea is that humans are in charge of the world on behalf of God. In another sense, dominion means to exercise control or power, or, the authority to rule when a King has power over a certain territory, he exercises dominion over that territory.
In all these instances, the earth is seen as a territory or a colony of heaven from where God, the King, through His earthly representatives, humans, exercise dominion.
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10 NKJV
Adam and Eve, the first humans, the ones that directly received the mandate to exercise dominion, lost their authority. In defiance to God’s instruction to not eat from the tree of Knowledge of good and evil, they ate the fruit on the evil suggestion of Satan.
“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” ”
Genesis 2:16-17 NKJV
“Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.”
Genesis 3:4-6 NKJV
In Christ Jesus, the lost dominion has been restored. So much so that for anyone in union with Christ Jesus, they are heirs of God’s Kingdom, recreated for good works.
“But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.””
Galatians 3:13 NLT
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”
Romans 8:16-17 NKJV
“And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.””
Revelation 5:10 NKJV
Thus, the Kingdom of God is the invisible rulership of God on earth through His human agents or the fulfillment of God’s will on earth.
Now the question is: Are believers, true followers of Jesus Christ, aware of their God given mandate to exercise dominion? If yes, how are they wielding this power? Is their dominion impactful? If not, why not?
To be continued. . . .
