As we begin to explore our theme for 2025, HIGHER GROUND, let us lay a proper foundation for understanding its meaning and significance.
1. The Concept of Higher Ground
• The term higher ground is derived from the upward call referenced in Philippians 3:14.
• Upward and higher contrast with downward and lower.
• Moving from lower ground to higher ground involves a process.
2. The Example of Jesus Christ
• Jesus Himself followed this process, a humbling journey, as outlined in Philippians 2:2–11. Here’s a summary of His example:
1. Jesus was not consumed with His equality with Father-God. He did not cling to His title, position, authority, or power.
2. He willingly set aside His divine privileges and took on the status of a servant.
3. He lived a selfless, obedient life, even to the point of death on the cross.
4. Because of His humility:
• God exalted Him to the highest place.
• He was given a name above every other name.
• At the name of Jesus, every knee bows—in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.
• Every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord.
• All of this glorifies Father-God.
3. Our Call to Follow
• Like Jesus, we are called to follow this humbling process.
• This is why we are instructed to forget the past—our positions, privileges, accomplishments, and even failures—because the new experience God has for us far surpasses anything we’ve left behind.
