african culture

As a child growing up in Nigeria, Africa, part of the fun I used to have was to play outdoors during festival seasons watching masquerades. Masquerades wear masks or veils and dress up colorfully to hide their true identity. They are believed to be spirit beings from heaven visiting the earth with supernatural powers and abilities. With hindsight I wonder why we viewed them in such awe because they inflict fear on onlookers. They fight and cane people. But, their ecstatic dance steps are fascinating to children.

The moral of this story is that masquerades pretend to be who they are not and they succeeded in fooling a lot of people, children in particular.

In a similar manner, many people go through life totally disconnected from themselves. They are either in denial of their true identity or they fail to engage in self discovery in order to know, accept and embrace who they truly are.

In some cases, such people may have had traumatic experiences whilst growing up and they have built up walls of defense around themselves. Even though it is a form of protection, the walls prevent them from being real.

Similar people lived during the time of Jesus; they are described as ‘Sadducees and Pharisees’ –

“ Great sorrow awaits you religious scholars and Pharisees—frauds and imposters! You are nothing more than tombs painted with fresh coats of white paint—tombs that look shining and beautiful on the outside, but within are found decaying corpses full of nothing but corruption. Outwardly you masquerade as righteous people, but inside your hearts you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. ”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭23:27-28‬ ‭TPT‬‬

For life to be impactful, it must be lived inside out. You are a spirit being with a soul and encased inside a body. The real you is inside, called the ‘spirit’; it is referred to as ‘the inner man.’ However, the real man needs a body in order to function on planet earth.

Having this understanding in order to live a meaningful and impactful life is the essence InsideOut Digest.

“You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.”

Matthew‬ ‭5:8‬ ‭MSG‬‬

This Bible passage says that real life is lived inside out, it is being authentic. It is living a life devoid of masks and veils so that others see you as you are – in all your brokenness and vulnerability.

InsideOut Digest aims at taking its readers through a life changing journey of self discovery, authenticity and impact.

Never thought about this. However, it is so true. Most people wear a veil without noticing it.
